Periodontal implications of formocresol medication.

چکیده
Intracanal medications have historically played an important role in root canal therapy. Their purpose is to establish an antimicrobial environment within the pulp chamber (1). The root canal system may contain significant types and numbers of organisms that cause acute exacerbations, delay treatment procedures, and retard or prevent healing. Although mechanical instrumentation and frequent irrigation eliminate the majority of microorganisms, an intracanal medication is often used to reduce the bacterial population retained within dentin (2). Formocresol is an effective and frequently used medicament. The combined action of cresol, a proteincoagulating phenolic compound, and formaldehyde, an alkylating agent, is highly antimicrobial; but it may cause significant destruction of vital tissues (2). Several studies (3-6) have confirmed the tissue-irritating and cytotoxic effects of formocresol which result in inflammation and tissue fixation Morse (7), in his review of immunological aspects of pulpal-periapical diseases, states that formocresol can act as a hapten, interact with the host protein, and result in an immunological reaction. He suggests that immunological responses caused by this mechanism can result in endodontic "flare-ups" in the form of pain, swelling, and bone resorption. Others (8, 9) also described the immune response. Because formocresol has the potential to produce severe adverse effects on vital tissue, application of the medication in the canal system must be carefully controlled. Wesley et al. (1) recommend that formocresol be applied to a sterile cotton pellet and squeezed dry in a sterile gauze before being placed into the pulp chamber. Vaporization results in permeation of the medication throughout the

Histological analysis of the association between formocresol and endotoxin in the subcutaneous tissue of mice.
This study performed a histological analysis of the effect of formocresol associated to endotoxin (LPS) in the subcutaneous connective tissue of mice. Ninety mice were randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=30). Each animal received one plastic tube implant containing endotoxin solution (10 mg/mL), formocresol (original formula) or a mixture of endotoxin and formocresol. The endotoxin and formocresol...
متن کاملMineral trioxide aggregate as a pulpotomy medicament: a narrative review.
BACKGROUND Several medicaments have been used to devitalize remaining pulp or maintain pulp vitality and promote healing. Based on pulpal biocompatibility and good sealing ability, a growing interest in more biocompatible materials promotes mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) as an alternative to traditional medicaments. Uniquely, MTA can preserve pulpal health predictably and promote healing with...
متن کاملDo we still need formocresol in pediatric dentistry?
Most pediatric dentists in the United Kingdom and North America1,2 use formocresol pulpotomy for vital primary pulp therapy. In the United Kingdom, 54% of pediatric dentists reported concerns about possible sensitization, toxic, mutagenic or carcinogenic effects of formocresol; 42% of specialists surveyed in 2002 were considering changing their pulp technique to avoid formocresol.1 We performed...
متن کاملAn evidence-based analysis of the antibacterial effectiveness of intracanal medicaments.
The authors reviewed the literature evaluating the antibacterial effectiveness of intracanal medicaments used in the management of apical periodontitis. A PICO (problem, intervention, comparison, outcome) strategy was developed to identify studies dealing with calcium hydroxide, phenolic derivatives, iodine-potassium iodide, chlorhexidine, and formocresol. The final inclusion/exclusion criteria...
متن کاملThe evaluation of cytotoxicity of suab1 on l929 fibroblast cell line and the comparison with formocresol
Formocresol is common treatment in exposed pulp of primary teeth at caries, trauma and damaged with cavity preparation. Although, clinical and radiographic success and good clinical results are observed, dentistry societies are still searching for materials interchangeable with formocresol. Suab1 is a phytochemical agent that was selected because of its anti- bleeding effect. In this study, we ...
